Snakes, the slithering creatures of the wild, are facing an unprecedented threat: extinction. A recent study has revealed that deadly diseases, often caused by parasites or fungi, are decimating snake populations worldwide. What makes this situation even more concerning is the high rate of coinfections. Almost half of the snakes studied (44%) were infected with more than one pathogen, and in around 29%, 11%, and 3% of snakes, the team found two, three, or four pathogens simultaneously. This means that snakes already weakened by one infection are at even greater risk of succumbing to other diseases.

The study also revealed that snake species is a predictor of likely pathogens. For instance, pygmy rattlesnakes were most likely to be sick with snake fungal disease, and rattlesnakes were also most likely to host Ro. This suggests that certain species are more susceptible to specific pathogens due to their diet or other factors.

One of the most alarming findings was the presence of antibiotic-resistant Mycoplasma spp. in 18% of snakes. This bacterium can cause upper respiratory disease and has never before been reported in wild snakes in the US. The study's authors warn that this resistance could have severe implications for snake conservation and the control of invasive species.

The implications of these findings are far-reaching. For example, Burmese pythons and brown anoles, both invasive in the US, are known to be "competent" hosts of Ro. This means that these invasive species could potentially spread the parasite to native snakes, further endangering their populations.
